Tropical Traditions: Coconut Flakes Review & Giveaway

 Coconut Flakes Review & Giveaway

Tropical Traditions definitely offers the BEST coconut! I have tried the shredded coconut before and it was amazing. This time I received the coconut flakes. The flakes are larger in size, and they are fresh and ready for me to start baking. I love that it’s not sweetened, it’s all natural & absolutely delicious! I decided to treat my family with homemade coconut shrimp. Are you drooling yet? Well, let me tell you how I made them and see if you are willing to test out my recipe…

Step 1: I buy the frozen medium sized, deveined and peeled shrimp at Costco (I am not much for deveining the shrimp, so better have someone else do the dirty work). Defrost your shrimp, wash and use a peeling knife to open the shrimp up.

Step 2: Next you will want to prepare your batter. Take approximately a cup of flour, 1 egg and 1/4-1/2 cup of milk (depending on how thick it looks) and blend together until the batter is smooth.

Step 3: The breading is a 3 step process. First dip the shrimp into flour. Next dip into the batter. Last cover the shrimp in coconut.

Step 4: Set your shrimp to the side & heat up your oil on medium heat. I flick a little water into the oil. If it spits back at you, then you are ready to FRY!

Step 5: Depending on how large your pan is will determine how many you can fry at one time. I used a 2 quart pan, so I could only fry one – two at a time (to insure that they oil didn’t boil over). You will let them cook until brown (approximately 1-2 minutes). If they start to burn, then take them off the heat and let the oil cool off.

Step 6: Place them on a paper towel to let the oil drain.

Step 7: EAT!

So are you drooling now? I can’t wait to try a few more recipes out. Thank you Tropical Traditions!!!

Tropical Traditions: Canadian Raw Honey Review & Giveaway

Tropical Traditions is spoiling my taste buds with this delicious Canadian Raw Honey! I have had organic honey before, but not raw honey. Let me tell you there is a difference! This honey is not processed, so it is still in it’s natural crystal form (see photo to the right).
Tropical Traditions Organic Raw Honey has never been heated above the temperature it would naturally see inside the hive. Due to not being processed, this honey does contain live yeast and enzymes. It also contains pollen because it has not been filtered, just screened.
*Please note that honey can sometimes contain a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum which causes infant botulism. Do not give honey to children younger than 1 year of age.
I love adding honey to my tea… or just taking a spoonful to sooth my sore throat. With the change in weather, colds have hit our household HARD. Cough, sneeze, ugh… honey lemon tea has been a perfect home remedy!
There are so many fun ways to use this honey. You can find excellent, kitchen-tested recipes on their blog:  http://www.freecoconutrecipes.com!  You can also search by ingredient name or by keyword.
Here is one I am sure to try (once I get all the ingredients… just missing the shredded coconut… looks like I will be placing an order soon)…

Tropical Traditions: Liquid Soap Review & Giveaway

Tropical Traditions believes that the key to any healthy, natural soap is the oil that is used as the base… and I have to agree. I make my own lotions (I haven’t tried to make soaps yet) and I know from experience that if you don’t have the right base, the product won’t turn out correctly. It may be too oily, too harsh, down right WRONG! After sampling the liquid soaps from Tropical Traditions, I believe they found the RIGHT base!
Tropical Traditions soaps are made with Organic Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil as their base, and comes in Tea Tree, Lavender or Unscented.
There are very few soaps made from 100% coconut oil, and most soaps on the market today that are made from coconut oil are made from highly refined versions of these oils, and may contain chemical solvents that were used in the refining process. Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil is traditionally made from fresh organic coconuts, and independent laboratory tests show that it has a higher level of antioxidants than other coconut oils. While other coconut oil soaps may exist in the market place containing refined coconut oil, few if any will be made with high quality Organic Virgin Coconut Oil.
My favorite is the Tea Tree Liquid Soap! But all of them are absolutely wonderful. I put the Unscented on by my husbands sink. He has a form of eczema and most soaps irritate his skin. He refuses to use anything with a scent, so I was happy to introduce him to Tropical Traditions… and he was more than happy to test it out!
One pump is all you need to clean up. Great lather ~ instant foam when you pump, so lather, rinse and go. No sticky soap residue! I think Santa needs to start shopping, because these would make great stocking stuffers for any adult on your list.

Tropical Traditions: Organic Herbal Breath Spray

Being a mom, on the go, sometimes I need a quick way to freshen up my breath. Hey, I am not going to lie… my breath is not always smelling like roses. Yes, I brush my teeth, floss and use mouthwash daily. However, that doesn’t help me when I have a picnic at the park and I want to talk with the other parents in the area.
Tropical Traditions has an amazing premium breath spray! It’s 100% organic and doesn’t contain sweeteners or preservatives. I love the taste! Instant fresh breath & you can feel it traveling down your throat. Better than any other breath spray I have used in the past!
It contains herbal extracts from organic ingredients: organic extracts of licorice, peppermint, and ginger, organic essential oil of spearmint, and organic flavor extracts of cinnamon and clove.

Small and compact, packaged in a cobalt blue glass bottle with a spray pump/cap allows a mom-on-the-go clean, fresh breath easily. I toss mine in my purse

Tropical Traditions: Powdered Dish Detergent Review & Giveaway

Everyday, dishes get dirty and have to be cleaned…but is your detergent environmentally safe? Thanks to Tropical Traditions I can say YES. Besides having amazing organic products like coconut flour, coconut flakes, and coconut oil, they have skin care & household products too.

We run our dishwasher almost daily (every mom knows that kids make messes… and while the kids are home, there is not a lot of time to wash the dishes by hand).
In the mountains, we have to use a water purifying system to clean our water, which results in water soft. Due to that, we can’t just use any old detergent. We’ve been using Rainsoft (the formula designed to go with our system) for 8 years. I couldn’t wait to try something new. I was immediately intrigued with description of Household Traditions Powdered Dishwasher Detergent With Enzymes ~ non-toxic and environmentally safe with no harmful by-products. It’s free of chlorine, phosphates, fillers and fragrances…plus it’s Ultra concentrated! Depending on your dishwasher, you may be able to use half as much as you used before! Which means a little goes a long way! A mother’s dream…a product that saves you money!
Household Traditions Powdered Dishwasher Detergent rinses away completely leaving no residue on your dishes so you get a clean, safe sparkle. This formula dissolves easily and doesn’t clump up. Household Traditions Powdered Dishwasher Detergent can be used in hard or soft water. Problem is, with soft water you have to be careful not to use too much detergent, otherwise you will see water spots on your wine glasses. Other than the occasional water spot, my dishes are clean and so is my dishwasher. Yes…less residue remains on the bottom of the dishwasher!

Did you know that many states have now banned or severely limited the use of phosphates in automatic dish detergents? Household Traditions Powdered Dishwasher Detergent contains absolutely no phosphates or other toxic materials like chlorine but still gets your dishes clean.

Directions for use: (1 Scoop = 2 oz.)
Fill one dishwasher cup for regular loads. Fill both cups for tougher problems. Load according to dishwasher manufacturer’s directions. It is recommended to wash silver articles by hand. Make sure all items are dish-washer safe. For really tough jobs, like baked-on food, soak item for 30 minutes or more in sink full of hot water and 1 scoop of Household Traditions Powdered Dishwasher Detergent. Safe for septic tanks. Store in cool dry place.
Ingredients: Sodium citrate, sodium carbonate, sodium percarbonate, surfactants, rinse agents, silicate.

Tropical Traditions: Organic Coconut Flour (Gluten Free) Review & Giveaway

Review & Giveaway

I love to bake, but I have never made brownies from scratch! When I received the Organic Coconut Flour from Tropical Tradition I noticed the brownie recipe on the bag…and I had to give it a try.
The recipe was easy to follow….though I did substitute a few things.
First I melted/mixed the butter, sugar, chocolate & Karo syrup.
(substituted bittersweet chocolate with semi-sweet chocolate chips -
I just couldn’t find the bittersweet at Vons…oh well
and substituted brown rice syrup with Karo – never heard of brown rice syrup)

Next, I beat the eggs with the vanilla extract.

Once the chocolate mixture cooled, I added it to the eggs/vanilla extract mix.
Mixed in the coconut flour, cocoa powder, baking powder & heavy cream.
I almost made a HUGE mistake when I grabbed the baking soda instead of
the baking powder. Noticed it before I measured it out.

Poured mixture into a greased pan (dusted with coconut flour & cocoa powder)
and baked for 30 minutes.
Kids seemed to like the brownies…while my husband is still a bigger fan of regular brownies.
These brownies do have an acquired taste. They have a hint of coconut, which I like.
But the chocolate taste is not quite there…might be due to my substitutions.
I will have to search the store for bittersweet chocolate & brown rice syrup!

Why is Tropical Traditions Organic Coconut Flour so special? Well, it’s gluten-free (so a great alternative for those who suffer Celieac Disease).

Tropical Traditions organic coconut flour is fiber from the coconut meat after most of the oil has been extracted to make Virgin Coconut Oil. It is certified organic, unsweetened, and has not been treated with sulfites. Tropical Traditions organic coconut flour is high in dietary fiber and protein, and is gluten-free. It has more fiber than gluten-based grains. Tropical Traditions organic coconut flour can be added to standard wheat-based recipes to add extra fiber, by substituting 10-30% of the grain-based flour with our coconut flour. Some recipes, such as muffins and quick breads, can be accomplished with 100% Tropical Traditions organic coconut flour and therefore be 100% gluten-free! (See some free recipes below.) Since organic coconut flour contains natural sugar from the coconut meat, baked goods need less sugar added. The organic coconut flour has a mildly sweet coconut taste!

Tropical Traditions organic coconut flour also contains over 19% non-gluten protein! Therefore, it makes an excellent addition to shakes and smoothies where fiber and protein are needed. Or simply dissolve a spoonful in water as a high-fiber drink with a coconut flavor! This organic coconut flour is very versatile and very tasty. Sprinkle it over your favorite dishes to add a wonderful coconut flavor, use it as a thickener in soups and sauces – the possibilities are endless!
